Pros & Cons Of Making Homemade Baby Food

Pre-packaged foods are one of the conveniences that have been characteristic of the last century. From cereal to frozen meals, a good portion of the foods that we consume tend to be made somewhere else, rather than in our own kitchens. While there are certain advantages to this phenomenon, there are disadvantages as well. This is true not only of the foods that adults eat, but it even applies to baby foods.

Making homemade baby food is something that, strangely enough, just doesn’t occur to many people. When baby food jars are readily available at the supermarket, people tend to grab for them like they would any other packaged foods. It is the convenience and the variety that make packaged baby foods so appealing to people. Yet, making homemade baby food is an option that parents might consider, and it is at least worth the time to weigh the pros & cons of making homemade baby food.

There are certain benefits or “pros” to making homemade baby food. First of all, by making homemade baby food, your baby can eat at least some of the foods you are eating. This will help her to grow accustomed to tasting the foods you like. In addition, making homemade baby food can be much less expensive than buying prepackaged baby food. Making your own homemade baby food can also allow you to feed your baby specific types of foods, such as if you prefer to use organic fruits or vegetables.

There are also some cons to making homemade baby food. First of all, making homemade baby food is less convenient than buying baby food at the store. In addition, it is harder to get a variety of homemade baby food than it is to get a variety of packaged baby foods. In addition, making homemade baby food requires you to be diligent about storing or freezing unused portions of the baby food, as large amounts of what you make can go bad if you are not careful. Finally, although you can hand-select the foods you feed to your baby in making homemade baby food, those foods haven’t necessarily been tested the way that packaged baby foods have for things like bacteria and nitrates.

After weighing the pros & cons of making homemade baby food, you should be able to decide if the practice is right for your family.
