  Should I Keep Taking Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplements While I Am Nursing?



Omega-3 fatty acids are an important part of a baby’s development. This includes the development of the baby’s brain and nervous system while the baby is still in the womb. In addition, Omega-3 fatty acids may contribute to the development of the baby’s immune system, as well. For this reason, many women may take an Omega-3 fatty acid supplement while they are pregnant. Now, research is showing that taking Omega-3 fatty acid supplements while you are nursing may also help your baby with continued development.

During the first two years of life, a baby continues to need a sufficient amount of Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are thought to play an ongoing role in the way the brain functions, as well as with general growth. If you are nursing, there is always the danger that you won’t be taking in enough Omega-3 fatty acids, and therefore won’t be able to pass those Omega-3 fatty acids along to your baby through your breast milk. Taking Omega-3 fatty acid supplements while you are nursing can help to make sure your baby gets enough of this important nutrient. In addition, there is some research that suggests that a deficiency in Omega-6 fatty acids and Omega-3 fatty acids can cause you to produce an insufficient amount of breast milk, and can lead to engorgement of the breasts.

The fact that Omega-3 fatty acids can be passed from mother to her baby through breast milk may even be one of the advantages of nursing. None of the major formula brands currently contain Omega-3 fatty acids. By taking Omega-3 fatty acid supplements while you are nursing, you are giving your baby a specific advantage that bottle-fed babies may not have.

Omega-3 fatty acids can be obtained by eating fish and certain other foods. To be certain that you are getting enough Omega-3 fatty acids, however, Omega-3 fatty acid supplements may be the best way to go. Whether you are using fish oil or flaxseed oil for your Omega-3 fatty acid supplements, it would seem that it is important that you continue taking them while you are nursing.
