Soothing Treatments For Episiotomies

Share |

There are parts about pregnancy and childbirth that are downright painful. While the most intense pain related to childbirth passes once labor is complete, there still can be lingering aches and soreness after your baby is born. For many women, childbirth includes an episiotomy – the intentional cutting of the perineum in order to create a wider opening for your baby to be born. For other women, the perineum may tear during childbirth. While not every woman will have perineal tearing or will need an episiotomy, it is not uncommon to think that, at the very least, a woman’s perineum will go through some trauma during childbirth. Fortunately, there are some soothing treatments for episiotomies, perineal tearing, and perineal soreness.

One soothing treatment for an episiotomy is a perineal compress. There are several types of perineal compresses available to women. There are perineal compresses that resemble an ice pack, for example. These perineal compresses use cold to soothe the perineal area. Some of these compresses can also be used warm, as well. There are also herbal compresses that can help to soothe an episiotomy. An herbal compress, generally speaking, will take the form of a bag which you fill with certain herbs. The bag is often heated, and then used as a compress in the perineal area.

There are also a variety of ointments, oils, and balms that are often used as soothing treatments for episiotomies. There are, of course, the common lotions and balms that are made from artificial ingredients. Many of these are very similar to regular hand lotion. For some women, these may be good options to use as soothing treatments for episiotomies. There are also more natural treatments available. There are, for example, lotions that are based on olive oil, rather than lanolin. These ointments or lotions might have a variety of herbs designed to soothe your episiotomy as well, including shea butter, witch hazel, yarrow, calendula, and St. John’s Wort.

Ultimately, the type of treatment you use for your episiotomy is up to you. Regardless of how you try to soothe your episiotomy, you should make sure to follow up with your health care provider as far as antibiotic and other care for the episiotomy, as well.
