Sore nipples are, for many moms, simply a normal part of what happens during breastfeeding. The fact of the matter is that nearly every woman will experience sore nipples during breastfeeding at one point or another. Sore nipples are just one of the unfortunate side effects that often can accompany breastfeeding. Fortunately, there are things that a nursing mother can do in order to help treat her sore nipples during breastfeeding.
One of the oldest and most common ways to deal with sore nipples during breastfeeding is by using a compress. For many years, women have used cabbage leaves or even tea bags to soothe their sore nipples during breastfeeding. In addition to these very basic sorts of compresses, there are other compresses that you might consider to help your sore nipples during breastfeeding. Some of these compresses are herbal in nature, and use a variety of herbal ingredients to help soothe your sore nipples. Other compresses are similar to an ice pack, and can be used cold to numb your sore nipples.
Nipple creams and lotions are another way to soothe sore nipples during breastfeeding. There are a variety of creams and lotions available to you. Some of these rely on artificial ingredients, like lanolin. Other sorts of nipple creams or breast lotions take a more natural approach. Some of the natural nipple creams use ingredients such as cocoa butter, shea butter, and mango butter. Natural nipple creams may also rely on a variety of herbs to help with sore nipples, such as calendula.
It is important, as well, to know what is causing you to have sore nipples during breastfeeding. If it is because you are engorged, you might consider expressing your breasts in between feedings to relieve some of the pressure. If your nipples are sore because your baby is teething, however, then you are going to rely more on things like compresses or creams.
