If you’re planning on taking your baby to see the doctor or pediatrician because you think that she may have colic, there are a few things that you can do ahead of the appointment to be prepared. It’s also very helpful to have some idea of what to expect from the doctor, as well, so you know what may happen when you get there.
Here are some things you should do when you’re getting ready to take your colicky baby to the doctor:
- Keep track of your baby’s crying. Write down when he tends to cry as well as how often. Record how long the crying lasts. Make a few notes about your baby’s behavior or activities before, during and after the time that he’s crying.
- Make note of what you’ve tried to do in order to soothe your baby, as well as what seemed to make a difference and what didn’t seem to help at all.
- Write down what your baby has to eat and when, and make note of any gain or loss of weight for your baby.
It can also be helpful to jot down any questions that you might want to ask the doctor. Here are some of the more common questions you might want to ask while you’re there:
- Does my baby have colic? If not, is it possible that something else is causing these crying episodes?
- What are the potential implications of my baby’s colic? Will it have any long-term effects on growth, development or anything else?
- How can I deal with colic, or what can I do in order to help calm my baby down when he’s crying?
- What resources does the doctor recommend? Are there particular websites she would suggest you visit, or books or pamphlets that you might read?
- What are some tools that your family can use to help cope with your baby’s colic and crying?
