Using Herbs To Treat Nipple Tenderness

Share |

Nipple tenderness is extremely common for women that are breastfeeding, or that are still pregnant. There are many reasons that nipples may become tender. First of all, the changing levels of hormones during and after pregnancy can just make a woman’s nipples much more sensitive. Right after her baby is born, the growing supply of milk in a woman’s breast can also make her nipples tender, or even downright sore. The good news is that you can treat nipple tenderness without having to rely on products with all sorts of artificial ingredients. You can actually use a variety of herbs to treat your nipple tenderness.

The first way to use herbs to treat nipple tenderness is through the use of herbal lotions or creams. These lotions and creams will generally be based on things like mango butter, cocoa butter, or other naturally occurring ingredients. This is in contrast, of course, to products used to treat nipple tenderness that are based on lanolin. There is a concern from some women about lanolin that it may contain traces of pesticides, which could be transferred to your baby during the process of breastfeeding. The research in this area is not entirely conclusive, but many women wish to err on the side of caution. In addition to mango butter or cocoa butter these creams or lotions may include other herbs such as calendula in order to treat your nipple tenderness.

Another way to use herbs to treat nipple tenderness is through the use of an herbal compress. For many years women have been using cabbage leaves or even tea bags to treat nipple tenderness. A herbal compress takes this same principle and combines it with other herbal remedies. In fact, some herbal breast compresses actually use cabbage leaves or black tea leaves. In addition, a herbal compress will probably include calendula and other herbs, just as the herbal creams and lotions do.
