What Causes Morning Sickness, And How Can I Cure It?

The fact of the matter is that, even though roughly 70% of all pregnant women will experience some degree or another of morning sickness, experts are not agreed about what exactly it is that will cause morning sickness. Having said that, there are some theories about what might cause morning sickness.

Perhaps the leading theory regarding what causes morning sickness is that morning sickness is caused by the rapidly changing levels of hormones that occur in your body. Whether this has to do with hormones like estrogen, or whether it has to do with the pregnancy hormone hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin), researchers are not agree. There is some evidence to think that hCG may be at the root of morning sickness, as hCG continues to build up in your system until about the 12th week of your pregnancy, at which point the levels of hCG starts to decrease. This theory seems to be most consistent with actual experience, in that morning sickness typically decreases by this point of the pregnancy.

There are some things that you may be able to do to relieve your morning sickness, if not cure it altogether. First, you need to keep hydrated. Dehydration is a leading cause of nausea in general, and may trigger your morning sickness. Eating small frequent meals and snacks rather than three large meals during the day may also help to relieve or cure morning sickness. Some women have been able to relieve their morning sickness with acupuncture, or acupressure. If you are interested in acupressure, there are even a variety of wrist bands available that may help to reduce your morning sickness. Many women have had luck using ginger, as well, whether as ginger tea, or a ginger root supplement of some sort.

If your morning sickness is prolonged or severe, and you are unable to take in enough food or fluids, you should contact your health care provider. Severe or prolonged vomiting can cause a variety of problems for the pregnant woman, as well as for her baby.
