What Causes My Nipples To Bleed During Breastfeeding?

Share |

Often, the thing that causes your nipples to bleed during breastfeeding is a problem with your baby’s positioning, or your baby’s latching technique. Your baby may bite into the nipple, or the nipple may be so dry and cracked that it begins to bleed. The best way to fix this, then, would be to address your baby’s positioning or latching problem. Once you have done that, however, you may find that your nipples are still sore and bleeding, and that you feel the need to do something further to promote healing. Fortunately, there are some things that you can do to help when your nipples bleed during breastfeeding.

One thing that you might do if your nipples are bleeding during breastfeeding is to consider is the use of nipple butters or nipple creams. There are a wide variety of these types of products available on the market. Some of these products are organic and more natural in their composition, while others are more on the artificial side. Some of the creams and lotions on the artificial side of things might rely on ingredients like lanolin. Other sorts of nipple creams or breast lotions take a more natural approach. Natural nipple creams may also rely on a variety of herbs, such as calendula, to help you deal with your cracked nipples during breastfeeding. Very often these sorts of creams or butters will be based on something other than petroleum jelly or lanolin. For example, some of the natural nipple creams use ingredients such as cocoa butter, shea butter, and mango butter.

Another thing that you can do when your nipples bleed during breastfeeding is to use a breast compress. For ages, women have used a cabbage leaf or tea bag compress to help with sore, cracked, or bleeding nipples. There are also herbal compresses available, which may even contain cabbage or tea leaves, as well as a variety of other herbal ingredients. There are also breast compresses that have gel, or a gel-like natural substance, that can be used warm or that can be used cold. Generally, you will want to use a warm breast compress when treating your bleeding nipples.
