  What Causes Thrush?

Thrush is a relatively common condition for a baby. Thrush is a fungal infection that can appear as patches of white in your baby’s mouth, or even as a coating of white on the tongue of your baby. Typically, these spots cannot be washed off. When a baby has thrush, that baby may refuse a pacifier or a bottle. The same fungus that causes thrush is the fungus that causes diaper rash. It is not uncommon for a baby to have both diaper rash and thrush at the same time.

There are many different things that can increase the risk of your baby having thrush. For example, if your baby is being given an antibiotic medication, this can increase the chances that your baby will develop thrush. If a mother has a yeast infection during delivery, and her baby comes in contact with it, the baby can develop thrush. Sometimes, an object that a baby will put in their mouth will cause thrush. Even nipples or pacifiers can cause your baby to have thrush.

Once your baby has thrush, it is also not uncommon for that to be transferred to your breast during breastfeeding. If you are breastfeeding and your baby develops thrush, you will both need to be treated. Otherwise, it is possible that the two of you would pass thrush back and forth between you. To clear up the fungal infection, your health care provider will probably give your baby an oral medication for his mouth, and prescribe you some antifungal cream for your breasts.

There are also natural salves and creams available to help with your nipple soreness that may occur from thrush. These types of solutions might contain herbs like grape root, calendula, and yarrow, as well as other ingredients such as beeswax and olive oil. There are other herbal remedies based on herbs like gentian violet, some of which can even be used on your baby’s mouth. As always, you should speak with your health care provider before using any herbal remedy on your infant.
