What Could Be The Cause Of My Infant’s Diarrhea?

When thinking about what could be the cause of your infant’s diarrhea, it is important first to be able to recognize whether or not your infant actually has diarrhea. The fact of the matter is that a normal bowel movement for a baby can look a lot like diarrhea might look like in an adult. In the first month after a baby is born, these bowel movements can be quite frequent, as well. The way for a parent to know if an infant has diarrhea is to watch the frequency of bowel movements that a baby has. If your infant has a noticeable increase in the frequency of bowel movements over a day or two, it is likely that she has diarrhea.

There are any number of things that could be the cause of your infant’s diarrhea. It may be, for example, in the case of a baby that is breast fed, that the mother’s diet has changed. In the case of an infant that is bottle-fed, changing brands of formula could also be the cause of your infant’s diarrhea. In addition to dietary concerns, there are other things that could be the cause of your infant’s diarrhea, such as an infection or taking an antibiotic medication for an infection. Diarrhea can even be caused by any number of diseases.

Most of the time, your infant’s diarrhea will resolve itself within a few days to a week. Having said that, there are cases when your infant’s diarrhea won’t resolve itself. IN some extreme cases, diarrhea that does not resolve itself can even lead to death. More than three million children in the world die each year from diarrhea. Only about 400 to 500 of these deaths caused by diarrhea take place in the United States.

If your infant has severe or prolonged diarrhea, it is important that you speak with your health care provider. Your health care provider may be able to help you figure out what could be the cause of your infant’s diarrhea, as well as help with recommendations about how to treat your infant’s diarrhea.
