What Do Stretch Marks Look Like?

Stretch marks are an unfortunate side effect of pregnancy. While not every woman who will become pregnant will develop stretch marks, many of them will. For many first time moms, they may get stretch marks without even truly realizing what it is that is happening. Knowing what to look for will help you to know when you are getting stretch marks.

Stretch marks tend to start out looking like streaks on your skin. These streaks may at first be pink, brown, dark brown, or reddish brown in color. Really, the color of the stretch marks depends greatly on your skin color. As time passes, stretch marks will generally speaking fade to a color that is almost silvery and lighter than the skin around it. At this point, it can also be easier to cover up a stretch mark with makeup.

While stretch marks may be almost inevitable, we still should do what we can to try to prevent them. Unfortunately, many of the commercially available products designed to help with stretch marks just haven’t been sufficiently tested to be safe for pregnant women and their babies. Fortunately, there are a variety of natural products that may, in some cases, deter stretch marks, or at least help them to fade quicker.

Treatments for generally take the form of lotions or creams. These typically will rely on a variety of natural ingredients, such as avocado butter, shea butter, and olive oil. They may also include certain herbs such as chamomile, and other ingredients like Vitamin E that can help to treat your stretch marks naturally.

In all reality, the best way to treat stretch marks have less to do with treatment and more to do with general health. For example, gaining the recommended amount of weight during pregnancy, and gaining it slowly and steadily can help. Rapid weight gain will only exacerbate the stretch mark problem. Keep in mind here that you should still be gaining the required amount of weight, as not gaining enough weight can be harmful to both you and to your baby. In addition to helping both your health and your baby’s health, eating a balanced and healthy diet can help to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy. Specifically, good nutrition will help to strengthen your skin and to make it healthier, and help it to stretch easier and to contract back after you have given birth.
