What Does It Cost To Have A Baby?

The fact of the matter is that you can spend a lot more having a baby than you actually need to. In some ways, it can cost as much to have a baby as the parents are willing to spend. Some costs are, of course, absolutely necessary, while others may only serve to increase convenience.

Generally speaking, the largest costs that are involved in having a baby are the costs of medical expenses. Depending on the sort of health care provider you are using, as well as where you are having your baby and whether or not you will need to have a cesarean section, the cost of prenatal care plus the actual birth will typically range from around $3,000 using a midwife at home to around $12,000 or more with an obstetrician performing a C-section in a hospital. The good news here is that medical insurance companies will generally pay the vast majority of the medical expenses that are associated with the cost of having a baby.

Once the baby is born, she will need to have a place to rest. This could include a bassinette at first and a crib later on, or it might just include a crib at the beginning. A crib, along with a mattress and the necessary bedding can range anywhere from $150 to $2500, depending on the quality of the crib, the style, and the features that the crib has. You may even be able to find a used crib for much less than this amount, although you will need to make sure that it isn’t a recalled model, and that there are no structural problems.

You will also need a way to transport your baby. This will typically include a car seat, and may include a baby carriage or a stroller. Car seats start at around $40 and go up to several hundred dollars. Strollers can range from around $15 to several hundred dollars as well.

In addition to these sorts of initial preparatory costs for having a baby, there are ongoing costs to consider. Your baby needs to eat, to have clean diapers, and have clothes. If you are returning to work, you will also need to consider childcare expenses.
