  What Is A Safety Blanket?

A safety blanket is an excellent tool that you can use at bedtime to help your baby. Essentially, a safety blanket, sometimes called a “sleep sack” is a blanket that you wrap around your baby when he or she goes to sleep. A safety blanket works on the same basic principle as a swaddling blanket, in that it provides a safe and secure environment for your baby, which closely resembles the feeling that your baby would have had while still in the womb. A safety blanket is different from a swaddling blanket in that a safety blanket generally operates with a zipper, rather than with a specific pattern of folding the blanket.

A safety blanked provides several benefits to your baby. As mentioned above, a safety blanket provides a comfortable feeling for your baby. Your baby feels secure and warm. This in itself can often help to comfort a baby, especially a baby that has trouble falling asleep at times. In fact, the tight swaddling that a safety blanket can provide can, in some cases, be a part of a treatment plan for a baby that has colic.

Perhaps the most important benefit of using a safety blanket is that it may actually reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS for short. Research has demonstrated that placing your baby on the back to sleep will reduce the risk of SIDS. The safety blanket helps to keep your baby on his back. In addition, a safety blanket is designed in such a way that it cannot cover your baby’s face, no matter how restless a sleeper he or she may be. When a baby’s face becomes covered, it can lead to a blocked air flow, which is one of the possible contributors to SIDS. Unlike a regular blanket, your baby is not going to be able to wrap a safety blanket around his or her head, or to kick the safety blanket off in the middle of the night.

Safety blankets are generally lightweight and flame-retardant, as well, so they are easy to transport and won’t catch on fire easily.
