Cervical mucus is a fluid secreted by a woman’s cervix during her monthly cycle. During the different parts of her monthly cycle, cervical mucus will vary in its volume, color, and in its consistency. Cervical mucus is an important part of the reproductive process, and works to help the sperm make its journey from the vagina to the fallopian tubes, where it can fertilize an egg.

It is important to know exactly how cervical mucus changes during a woman’s cycle. After a woman menstruates, there will be no cervical mucus present at all for around three to five days. After this time, a small amount of cervical mucus will be produced. At this point, the cervical mucus will be sticky and can range in color from white to a cloudy clear color. As the woman nears ovulation, the amount of cervical mucus will increase. During this time, the cervical mucus will be white or cream colored, and will be moist and sticky, roughly the consistency of hand lotion. During the day or two before ovulation through the day after ovulation, cervical mucus will change again. During this time, it will be similar in texture and appearance to the white of an egg. This is the type of cervical mucus that is most helpful to the reproductive process, and is often referred to as “egg-white cervical mucus.” After a woman ovulates, the cervical mucus will become less slippery and will decrease in volume.

Many women who are trying to conceive have used this information to try to chart their monthly cycle. By examining their cervical mucus through several cycles, they can calculate when they are going to ovulate. This allows them to time intercourse appropriately so as to have the best chances of conception. If a woman does not have much cervical mucus, or if she is not producing egg-white cervical mucus, it can affect her ability to become pregnant. Some fertility medications, as well as certain nutritional supplements, may be able to help a woman to produce more egg-white cervical mucus, thereby increasing her chances for conception.
