  What Is DHA In Regard To Omega-3 Fatty Acids?

DHA refers to a specific type of omega-3 essential fatty acid. DHA is most commonly found in fish oil. In addition to being found in fish oil, DHA is also produced by the body from another type of omega-3 fatty acid. This other type of omega-3 fatty acid, known as a-linolenic acid, can be found in flax, chia, and other nuts and seeds.

DHA is an important fatty acid. DHA is found in the brain, and in the retina. There is evidence to suggest that DHA may reduce the levels of triglycerides, which will in turn lower a person’s risk of having heart disease. There is some research that suggests that low levels of DHA can actually trigger conditions such as ADHD and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as depression.

In recent years, there has been evidence that has come about that DHA may actually help a woman who is pregnant. This research suggests that low levels of DHA can contribute to a variety of problems with a woman’s developing baby. These problems can include things like poor development of the retina, problems with vision, and even problems with cognitive development. These studies suggest that DHA that is taken in directly, such as with fish oil, is more effective at helping with these problems than DHA that the body makes from a-linolenic acid.

DHA is an excellent nutritional supplement for a pregnant woman and for her baby. For the mother that is breastfeeding, there is a benefit as well in that DHA is thought to be passed on to the baby when the mother is nursing.

One of the down sides to many supplements that contain DHA Omega-3 fatty acids is that these supplements will very often have something of an aftertaste that is fishy. For this reason, many women have chosen not to use these supplements. Fortunately, there are now even some Omega-3 DHA fatty acid supplements that have an enteric coating, which not only helps to reduce or eliminate the fishy aftertaste, but also help it to dissolve more easily.
