What Is Egg White Cervical Mucus?

A woman’s reproductive system is specifically designed to help her be able to conceive. Right down to the detail of the secretions that occur during intercourse, there are many ways that a woman’s body is working to help her reproduce. Cervical mucus is an integral part of conception, and an important part of helping sperm go survive long enough to get to its destination, where it can fertilize an egg.

Cervical mucus is produced, of course, by the cervix. The hormone estrongen prompts a woman’s body to make cervical mucus. This cervical mucus will vary in its consistency, color, and volume througout a woman’s cycle. For the first few days after menstruation, there will be little or no cervical mucus. For the next few days, there will be a small amount of cervical mucus, and it will be somewhat sticky. It will also be a whitish to a cloudy/clear color at this point. In the days that lead up to ovulation, the cervical mucus will increase both in its consistency and the amount. During this time, cervical mucus will become moist and sticky, about the consistency of hand lotions. At this point, the color will be white or cream-colored. There is some chance of getting pregnant at this stage.

The most important cervical mucus occurs during ovulation. When you are ovulating, you will have the most cervical mucus. The cervical mucus should be about the same texture and have a similar appearance to an egg white; at this stage, it is often referred to as “egg-white cervical mucus.” This is the time, during ovulation, when you are most likely to become pregnant. By watching for egg-white cervical mucus, a woman can known when she is ovulating, and when the best time is to become pregnant.

A woman can track changes in her cervical mucus to figure out how fertile she is. To collect cervical mucus, insert your finger into your vagina. Move your finger around in a circular motion, as close to your cervix as you can get. This allows you to collect cervical mucus and examine both its color and its consistency. When you have egg-white cervical mucus, you are ovulating and should have intercourse if you are trying to conceive.
