Gripe water is a nutritional supplement that can be given to babies that are experiencing colic. Colic, which is defined as crying three or more hours on three or more days each week, can be a very frustrating experience for the family. The good news is that colic is not dangerous to your baby, and that it will eventually pass. Still, in the meantime, it may be worth trying a variety of treatments for colic, such as gripe water, in order to reduce the duration or the frequency of your baby’s crying.

Gripe water assumes, first of all, that colic is caused by some form of gastrointestinal discomfort or pain. While research has not conclusively demonstrated that this is the case, at the very least researchers are convinced that addressing any potential digestive issues will typically help the child that has colic to some degree or another. Of course, there are other things that you can do to try to relive colic, including things like the use of swaddling blankets, infant massage, and even a simple ride in the car.

Gripe water generally contains some ingredients known to help the digestive tract. Fennel is one of the most common ingredients in gripe water. Fennel is a safe and natural treatment that is used for gas, hiccups, and an upset stomach. Fennel has been used for over a century for this purpose. Another common ingredient in gripe water is ginger. The ability of ginger to reduce or relieve nausea has been demonstrated time and time again. In fact, many moms have used ginger while they were pregnant in order to help deal with morning sickness. Sodium bicarbonate is a common ingredient in gripe water, as well. Sodium bicarbonate is often used to decrease the acidity of the stomach, and to assist with gas. Finally, many types of gripe water will also contain fructose, which will give the gripe water a relatively pleasant taste for your baby.

While gripe water may not help every baby with colic, it may be worth using to see if it will help your baby.
