  What Is Gut Flora?

Gut flora refers, very simply, to the complex ecosystem that occurs in the gut, or digestive system, of every person. Gut flora is made up of a variety of things. One of the most important components of gut flora is bacteria. These bacteria and the rest of the gut flora performs a number of very important functions for the body. Some of these functions include:

- Helping the gut to develop

- Helping the gut to function

- Assisting the gut with digestion

- Assisting the gut with its absorption of nutrients

- Assisting the gut with its absorption of minerals

- Synthesizing vitamins

- Helping to break down carcinogens from the diet

- creating a natural barrier against harmful bacteria, toxins, and antigens

- Helping to protect the body against infection.

As you can see, gut flora is an essential part of a person’s health. Gut flora is actually made up, among other things, of bacteria. When we think about bacteria, we often think about the harmful bacteria that are responsible for things like illness and infection. However, there are also good bacteria that play important roles in the body. These bacteria are an essential part of the gut flora.

Keeping the right balance of gut flora is essential to the functioning of the digestive system. Sometimes, our bodies may need a little bit of help with this balance, however. This can be especially true of infants, whose gut flora is really just developing. The good news in this regard is that there have been advances in recent years in probiotics, which may be able to help with gut flora. Probiotics are, at the most basic level, live bacteria that are used in the same way that a vitamin or mineral supplement is used. Probiotics such as L. reuteri Protectis have been demonstrated to have a variety of health benefits, not the least of which is to help the gut flora as it does its job of digestion.
