The Shettles method of gender selection is a natural way that couples can improve their chances of conceiving a child of a certain gender. While the Shettles method is not 100% effective, it is thought to be one of the most effective methods of gender selection, short of medical intervention such as occurs with expensive and complicated fertility procedures such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or Intrauterine Insemination (IUI).

The Shettles method of gender prediction is based on ideas about the composition of sperm. There are two different types of sperm. There are the sperm that have the Y chromosome. These sperm are the sperm that will produce a boy if they successfully fertilize an egg. The other type of sperm has the X chromosome. These types of sperm will produce a girl if they successfully fertilize an egg. The Shettles method of gender selection provides adherents with a way to try to make sure that the sperm that produce boys are the sperm that make it to the egg.

The sperm that produce boys are thought to be weaker, smaller, but faster than the sperm that produce girls. Therefore, in the Shettles method of gender selection, the object is to time intercourse so as to benefit one type of sperm or the other. For example, to conceive a boy, the objective is to get the sperm that produce boys through the acidic environment of the vagina past the cervix into the fallopian tubes as rapidly as possible. This is accomplished in several ways. First, penetration should be deep, such as with rear entry intercourse, to deposit the sperm close to the cervix. Second, the woman should have an orgasm if at all possible, as the secretions that accompany an orgasm will help the sperm on its way. Finally, and perhaps most key to the Shettles method of gender selection, intercourse should be time on the day of ovulation or the day previous in order to conceive a boy. Obviously, then, you would follow the opposite to conceive a girl.

While the Shettles method of gender selection doesn’t always work, it certainly may be worth an attempt, especially if you don’t seem to have any other fertility issues that would warrant the use of a fertility specialist.
