What Is The Treatment For Anovulation?

Share |

Anovulation refers to a condition in which a woman does not ovulate. Because there can be any number of possible causes for anovulation, it is important that a woman first identify what could be causing her anovulation. Once she knows what the possible causes of anovulation are, she can more effectively go about trying to find a treatment for anovulation.

Sometimes, anovulation is caused by something that is relatively simple, in terms of treatment. For example, anovulation can be caused by a simple infection, which an antibiotic medication can resolve quickly. Anovulation may occur after a period of rapid weight gain or loss, in which case a woman will typically start ovulating again within a couple of months of staying around the same weight. Stress can cause anovulation, as well. Relaxation techniques, or even anti-anxiety medications may be needed to help in this case. Strenuous exercise can also lead to ovulation, in which case the treatment is, simply, to exercise not so strenuously.

There is another category of causes of anovulation for which the treatments are not as simple or obvious, and for which there may not be direct treatments. Pituitary or thyroid problems can be at the root of anovulation, for example. Treating these problems will often, as a side effect, resolve the problem of anovulation in a secondary sort of manner.

Sometimes, anovulation is caused with problems with the ovaries. This might take the form of PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), ovarian failure, or resistant ovarian syndrome. In cases where there seems to be an ovarian problem, fertility medications are generally the preferred treatment for anovulation. These might include medications such as Clomid, which helps to stimulate hormones that cause ovulation. If treatment for anovulation with Clomid is not successful, Pergonal might be the next medication that a health care provider tries. There are other medicinal treatments for anovulation, as well.

There are some herbal treatments for anovulation that may be considered for just about any of these cases. Supplements containing Chasteberry (Vitex) are especially common among advocates of herbal treatments for anovulation.
