It’s normal and natural for you, as a parent, to be worried about how your baby is growing and developing. There are a number of skills that you’re on the lookout for. Whether you’re talking about crawling, fine motor skills, speech or some other skill, when your baby reaches those milestones it’s a joyous occasion.
Still, if your baby isn’t progressing the way that you would hope or at the rate you hope, it can be frustrating. This is as true for sitting up and rolling over as it is for many other milestones.
Should you be concerned if your baby isn’t sitting up and rolling over? For the most part, babies are each going to hit their own developmental milestones at their own pace. It’s important to remember that. For the most part, if your baby isn’t sitting up or rolling over, it doesn’t indicate a delay of any sort. It just means that your baby isn’t quite ready to do it.
Still, you should keep in touch with your child’s doctor about how these milestones are coming. If you ask your pediatrician at 4 months of age if your baby should be sitting up or rolling over, she’s not likely to be too concerned. If you ask your pediatrician at seven months, she may want to do some testing just to verify that there’s not something holding her back.
There are some things you can do to encourage sitting up and rolling over.Just playing with your child on the floor might encourage him or her to roll over, for example. Helping him or her to sit up with your support, at first, is another way to encourage your infant to sit up. Remember, however, that he still isn’t going to sit up or roll over until he is ready, no matter how much you encourage him.
