Why Aren’t I Producing Enough Milk For My Baby?

Share |

In general, a woman’s body is going to produce enough milk for her baby to meet her baby’s nutritional needs. A woman’s body will generally adjust, within the first days of nursing, to producing the amount of milk that her baby needs. However, there are certain circumstances in which a woman may not produce enough milk for her baby.

One situation where a woman may not be producing enough breast milk is for the adoptive mother who is starting to nurse. It can take time for her body to respond to the nursing instinct. Without pregnancy to go through, the body has to work quicker than normal in order to start producing enough milk. For some women who work outside of the home, it can also be a challenge producing enough milk for her baby. This is because the mother in this situation has to be able to pump enough breast milk to provider her baby what he or she needs for long periods of time when the mother is not there. Finally, there are illnesses that can affect a woman’s production of milk, as well.

Fortunately for women that are having a hard time producing enough milk for their baby, there are some remedies. There are herbal remedies, for example, that are thought to increase breast milk. There are at least three different herbs, including fenugreek, blessed thistle, and alfalfa, that may help to increase your supply of milk. This is because these herbs contain what are known as galactagogues, which are just chemicals in the body that can promote the production of milk.

In some cases, a woman may have a sufficient supply of milk, but find that their baby is having a hard time getting enough milk. This could be due to a variety of reasons. It could be that the baby is not latching on sufficiently, or that the baby is having an allergic reaction to something in the mother’s supply of milk. If you seem to be producing enough milk but your baby does not seem to be getting enough to eat, you certainly should speak with your health care provider or breastfeeding advisor. There are many things, beyond the woman’s supply of milk, which can cause problems with breastfeeding.

If you are concerned that you are not producing enough milk for your baby, you should speak with your health care provider. In some circumstances, it may be necessary to supplement your nursing with a small amount of formula, for example.
