Will Regular Soap Harm My Baby’s Skin?

Share |

In general, regular soap doesn’t present a danger, per se, to your baby’s skin. This does not mean that regular soap is the best thing for your baby’s skin, either. Regular soap can be rather harsh, and can often irritate, if not harm, your baby’s skin. In addition to this, many soaps may contain ingredients such as pesticides, or they may have been exposed to toxic chemicals or fertilizers. Some regular soap may contain medications that may or may not be beneficial to your baby, and some of which will have a variety of side effects. Knowing what exactly is in your soap will help you to know if there is a specific ingredient in the shampoo that is going to cause a problem for your baby’s skin.

Many parents choose to avoid using regular soap on their baby’s skin. Again, while regular soap won’t generally harm your baby’s skin, it certainly can irritate it. For this reason, parents have turned to more natural solutions. For example, there are a variety of all-natural baby soap, bath wash and shampoo products. These products tend to avoid many of the irritating substances that are contained in regular soap. In some cases, these natural products may even incorporate certain herbs that can help to soothe your baby at bath time, as well as get him or her clean. If regular soap is making your baby’s skin break out or is irritating your baby’s skin, it is probably time to try a more natural type of baby hygiene product, such as one of these.

If soap is making your baby’s skin break out in a severe way, or if it is causing severe rashes or sores to appear on your baby, you should probably stop using that shampoo, and talk to your health care provider about how best to go about healing your baby’s skin, and about what sorts of soaps and hygiene products may be more appropriate for your baby.
